Art has become a major element of this action sport event each year. Art is yet another form of healing. We find art in the outdoors, the water, the wind, in nature, and in the adventures we undertake. It is personal and powerful. This is one of our main Art Events:
Boards of Hope
Boards of Hope is an annual project of Athletes 4 Cancer that brings artists and the boards we ride together in the fight against cancer.
Boards of Hope invites Northwest artists to transform recycled boards of all types into canvases for stunning works of art, based on the theme, Healing & Hope. Artists and their boards will be featured and auctioned off at Kiteboarding 4 Cancer, July 14-15. Select artists will also be featured on the Athletes for Cancer and event websites.
What is Boards of Hope?

Boards of Hope began when Athletes for Cancer’s founder, Tonia Farman, brought art supplies, recycled papers, wood, and mixed media to her brother, Scott’s, bedside at Seattle’s Children’s Hospital. He was undergoing a long battle with leukemia and found a sense of calm and purpose in art. His organs and body were weak, but his soul poured out with life in his artwork. Mixed media and collage became his channel of expression, therapy and healing, even though his days were numbered. His works became an inspiration for Boards of Hope.
Boards of Hope can be interpreted many ways — it can be a theme of healing, struggle, and pain, but also of living, love, and celebration. Scott was a snowboarder and avid outdoorsman. The “board” component is meant to be anything we “ride” because that’s life — The ride of life is the journey that defines us.

Survivor Board Project
Board Shaper is an integral part of Athletes for Cancer’s Young Adult Survivorship Camps. Board Shaper is a 5-day surfboard art project that depicts each survivor athlete’s journey during camp of learning to surf and standup paddle. Truly personal and incredibly colorful, these boards open a window into the world of a survivor embracing the adventure and healing nature of the ocean for the first time.
